PROVOCATION and REAL LIFE CONNECTIONS

  • In order for students to engage with ideas that the mathematics they learn at school has real life applications, ask the students to predict how different people in different roles might use or need to know about volume and capacity.
  • Share the cards with the students and ask them to choose one or two of the perspectives they are interested in. Suggest they self-select groups to discuss the ideas from the cards they have chosen for themselves.
  • Ask the students to reflect if any of the ideas in the cards remind them of other real life situations that involve volume and capacity?
