Information for parents

Children are made readers on the laps of their parents.
~ Emilie Buchwald ~

Reading is more than decoding the  words on the page. It is about

  • Developing a love of reading
  • Being invited into new worlds, ideas and information
  • Learning to observe, question, reflect and engage with possibilities and problems
  • Exploring why people read
  • Exploring what different sorts of things we can read
  • Understanding that there are conventions to the way we read
  • Understand that authors and illustrators are sharing information and perspectives with the reader

The tasks below have been developed to support younger readers develop positive attitudes and confidence as a reader, while learning ‘how’ to read. There is some information for parents about the stages of reading as well as different reading strategies.

Questions parents can ask, that might prompt children to initiate their own learning inquiries.
