ABC of inquiry -ACTIVE

ABC of inquiry -ACTIVE: “I think the most important thing is to keep active and to hope that your mind stays active”  Jane Goodall. Active learning involves the learner having to do something, not just receive information and recall it. Active learning involves being able to make mistakes, see relevance, set ideas, reflect on understandings, argue and debate.

Active learning involves being able to make mistakes, see relevance, set ideas, reflect on understandings, argue and debate.
Learners can be active in the learning process by developing an understanding of themselves as a learner in a variety of settings and being able to use this to:
  • form groups, not just have the groupings given to them
  • choose personally relevant tools and process needed to develop a skill or idea
  • help develop the layout of the learning environment
  • develop personally relevant recording and reflection strategies.
Teachers can support active learning environments and communities by:
  • using a variety visible teaching and learning strategies
  • valuing difference and looking for ways to develop differentiated or personalized learning experiences
  • providing differentiated scaffolds and learning experiences
  • reflecting on the power they hold and where and how this power can be shared with learners
  • not making every decision, instead involving the learners in the decision making process
  • collaboratively developing flexible learning spaces
  • acknowledging shared ownership of the learning space with all the learners in the classroom.
Active learners have choice, voice and ownership in the learning process. Power structures and constructs are made visible.  Authentic choices and limits are made visible.
